Regional Collaboration: Building Stronger Health Systems Across ECSA

Across East, Central and Southern Africa, health teams face a practical question: how can experience from one setting help improve services in another? Regional cooperation creates space to compare approaches, discuss difficult decisions and turn shared learning into plans that fit local needs.

Learning from one another
A useful exchange begins with the everyday work of health professionals. How does a facility organise its services? What helps a district team support staff? Which steps make reporting clearer? These questions give discussions a practical focus and invite contributions from people closest to service delivery.
Learning also means examining what did not work. An honest account of an implementation challenge can be as useful as a success story. Comparing different experiences helps teams ask better questions before adapting an approach to their own resources, communities and responsibilities.
Connecting policy with practice
The ECSA Health Community provides a regional framework for cooperation on shared health priorities. Its strategic plan describes capacity building, coordination and policy work as part of this role. Read the ECSA-HC Strategic Plan 2024–2034.
A practical exchange can start with a small number of clearly defined topics. Participants could bring a local example, discuss the conditions behind it and identify what would need to change before the approach could be tried elsewhere.

Keeping the conversation moving
The work should continue after a meeting ends. A shared action note can record the question being explored, the people responsible and a realistic point for reviewing progress. Follow-up conversations can then focus on what teams have learned, rather than simply repeating the original discussion.
Regional collaboration is built through these practical connections: colleagues listening carefully, institutions sharing experience and teams making time to reflect. Keeping service delivery at the centre gives the conversation a clear purpose and helps shared ideas become useful local work.
